I wanted to provide you an update regarding Personal theft (e.g. pick pocketing, no violence used), which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Last weekend officers from Traffic were working the Night Time Economy in Camden based on Camden High Street when a victim who works in a local pub approached them.
While working he had accidently dropped his wallet without realising and at the end of his shift suddenly realised his wallet which contained his bank cards was missing. The victim looked at the CCTV and saw where he had dropped his wallet and that then a Suspect was clearly seen picking up the wallet and walking off with it. The Victim has cancelled his bank cards but in the early hours of the morning received a notification on his mobile phone that someone had attempted to use his bank card which was declined because he had cancelled it in another local pub. The traffic officers viewed the CCTV and then accompanied the victim to the pub where they located and detained the suspect. The Suspect was searched under Section 1 PACE for stolen property but the victims property was not found on him and he denied the allegation to start with.
After being shown the CCTV of him picking up the victims wallet and talking with the officers he admitted his actions and took them to the location where he had discarded the victims property. After the victim was reunited with his property he no longer wished to support any allegations and was just relieved to have his property returned to him. The Victim was incredibly happy with Police action in this matter and the Suspect apologised to the victim which he accepted.
